Question by : Delos Chang — On Mutual Index Funds?
Delos Chang is my name and I have a question about mutual index funds.

I’m looking to invest in the mutual index fund following the S&P 500 as a little experiment based ont he Random Walk Down Wall Street. Personally, I feel fundamental analysis is more worthy than technical analysis although many may differ. My question is: What are your own experiences with mutual index funds? I know that the maintenance costs are lower but how about a long-term projection of growth?

Best answer:

Answer by Blake Pardey
I have been seriously investing in shares for about 5 or 6 years. I looked into the benefits of index funds versus direct investment – I was not sure which was better for me. So I initially invested 50% of my money in an index fund, and for the other 50% I picked 5-7 shares that I thought might outperform the index. I am pleased to say that my stock picks have consistently outperformed the index over 6 years. So I think if you are prepared to do some research, you can outperform the index by picking a concentrated portfolio of direct shares. I look at growth and value characteristics and use both fundamental and technical analysis. I think fundamental analysis and technical analysis can both provide valuable insights.

PS – Hi Delos – if you like my answer then please award it best answer. cheers, Blake
